“Beneath the surface of the protective parts of trauma survivors there exists an undamaged essence, a Self that is confident, curious, and calm, a Self that has been sheltered from destruction by the various protectors that have emerged in their efforts to ensure survival. Once those protectors trust that it is safe to separate, the Self will spontaneously emerge, and the parts can be enlisted in the healing process” ― Bessel A. van der Kolk
Clarity Counseling believes in a collaborative, compassionate, empathetic, and nonjudgmental approach to counseling. This approach assists individuals in finding a sense of calm, centered connectedness within themselves and in their lives. Utilizing mindfulness, clients learn to approach life in a calm, compassionate, reflective manner. Through guided skill teaching and practice, individuals will learn how to let go of judgements and begin to experience their emotions without being controlled by them. Ultimately, individuals that seek services through Clarity Counseling will begin achieving greater peace and fulfillment in their lives. Clients are given guidance and build skills that provide insight and unlock their true potential to cope with life's challenges. Clients will develop an understanding of how life experiences have impacted their way of functioning in the world, their self-worth, how they relate to others, and how they react to different situations and relationships. Clarity understands that trauma has many forms. Shattered trust, connection and safety whether caused by abuse, neglect or emotional unavailability on the part of a caretaker or partner, can negatively impact brain structure and function. These types of experiences fundamentally change self-perception, self-esteem, self-worth and perceptions of the world around you and how you perceive and respond in relationships. Experiences that disowned choice, trust, collaboration and safety have a profound impact on the existence of survivors. Survivors often describe a part of themselves that never fully released the pain of their past or a response pattern that they continue to loop through. Clarity counseling integrates experiential and psychoanalytic therapies to assist clients in gently releasing the burdens from the past, while gaining insight into how trauma informs their life and relationships while respecting the sacredness of safety, collaboration and trust necessary to promote lasting change. Clarity believes in teaching emotional regulation and distress tolerance skills so clients leave sessions feeling more equipped to manage their emotions. Assisting clients with developing mastery over these experiences is a key to achieving long-term success. EMDR and Somatic therapies are utilized to assist with fully processing trauma to allow for integration of new healthier beliefs about yourself, your saftey and return to pre-trauma functioning.
We may think that if we ignore our fears, they’ll go away. But if we bury worries and anxieties in our consciousness, they continue to affect us and bring us more sorrow. We are very afraid of being powerless. But we have the power to look deeply at our fears, and then fear cannot control us. We can transform our fear. Fear keeps us focused on the past or worried about the future. If we can acknowledge our fear, we can realize that right now we are okay. -Thich Nhat Hanh
Anxiety is an emotion characterized by overwhelming feelings of tension, fear and the experience of frequent worrying. People who struggle with anxiety typically experience recurring intrusive thoughts or concerns associated with avoidance of certain situations. They may experience physical symptoms of anxiety in their body such as sweating, trembling, dizziness or a rapid heartbeat. Clarity understands anxiety as a preoccupation with the past such as "I can't believe I did that" or "I failed" or a preoccupation with the unforeseeable future impairing one's ability to stay focused and centered in the present moment. Anxiety is the body's natural way of alerting us to danger so we can act in a protective manner. Anxiety becomes problematic when it is based on perceived threat or when the alert system in your brain is firing when there is no clear, active threat in the moment. What makes anxiety overwhelming is it is as if the alert system is so loud it hijacks our ability to access our calm, logical and problem solving mind. Our mission is to assist you with examining how your thinking impacts your mood and shapes your behaviors along with giving clear strategies to re-center, re-evaluate and re-focus the mind in order to access a state of calm again. We will also explore the role of past experiences in activating this stress response presently and assist you with rooting yourself in the moment by building containment skills that will allow you to separate yourself from the distress you are experiencing. Body based or somatic therapies are utilized to assist clients with discharging anxiety trapped in the body.
Addiction and Eating Disorders
"It is impossible to understand addiction without asking what relief the addict finds, or hopes to find, in the drug or the addictive behavior" -Gabor Mate'
Clarity views addiction and eating disorders as an individual's solution and a symptom of the underlying the problem. What this means is that the addictive or disordered behavior is viewed as a coping strategy or adaptation used to protect or numb the individual from emotional, physical and psychological pain. Addictions on the surface may not appear to start out this way. Overtime substance use or an eating disorder becomes the one solution to resolving or avoiding emotional distress that is predictable, consistent and effective from the perspective of the inflicted individual. When addiction is viewed as the solution we can begin to explore the core or root of this illness in a non-shaming and non-stigmatizing way. We work to assist clients with gaining strength and confidence to utilize healthier methods of coping while assisting clients with regulating the distress that arises as abstinence is gained and the emotional turmoil fueling this behavior surfaces. We work with clients to assist with reconciling unresolved pain and experiences that create the need for an extreme coping strategy. We assist clients with developing an understanding of negative core schemas and relational patterns that have hindered the client's ability to fully recover. Recovery is possible when the client can understand factors contributing to this response and is open and willing to learning new ways of managing distress. Behavioral rehearsals are utilized to try on new behaviors, while developing new strategies to manage distress associated with facing fears. We will work on developing self-acceptance, self-compassion and mindfulness. You will also learn how to manage and tolerate urges more effectively through the cultivation of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) emotional regulation and distress tolerance skill building. Individuals seeking treatment from an eating disorder are expected to work collaboratively with a dietician and medical provider while committing to weekly counseling sessions.
